Is noma an infectious disease? Is it transmissible?

چکیده
Results A total of 82 acute noma cases and 327 controls were recruited. The noma epidemic curve declined during the study-period (P=0.04) with no seasonal effect (P=0.74). There was no intra-family case, but an older sibling rank was associated with a higher odds of developing noma (OR>=3 position 3.51; 95%CI: 1.57-7.85). Noma was also associated with severe wasting (OR 7.79; 3.89-15.57), severe stunting (OR 5.22; 2.73-9.97), a higher number of past pregnancies in the mother (OR 1.19 for each additional child; 1.08-1.32), the presence for any other disease within the last 3 months (OR 3.52; 1.89-6.54) or family posses no chicken at home, as aproxy for poverty (OR 2.53; 1.32-4.82). No association was observed between noma and serological status to various viruses (EBV, VZV, HSV, CMV, Morbillivirus). Definitive microbiological data will be available at time of the meeting.

Prevalence of Major Transfusion-Transmissible Viral Infections in Blood Donors Attending Fars Blood Transfusion Center, Shiraz, Southern Iran: 2002–05
Evaluation of trends in the rate of infectious diseases of blood donors is essential for monitoring safety of blood supply and effective screening of donors. Transfusion records of blood donors who attended the Center between 2002 and 2005 were reviewed for positive cases of HBS (by ELISA), HIV (by Western Blot) and HCV (by ELISA). During 2002–05, 507,531 persons donated blood. The prevalence r...
متن کاملNoma Neonatorum From Multidrug-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa: An Underestimated Threat?
We present the case of an extremely low birth weight infant with diffuse gingival noma, initially misdiagnosed as thrush. Multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain was cultured and treated with systemic and local colistin with complete healing. Noma neonatorum from multidrug-resistant pathogens may appear in neonatal intensive care units. Old antibiotics may help.Noma (cancrum oris) is ...
متن کاملEradicating infectious disease using weakly transmissible vaccines.
Viral vaccines have had remarkable positive impacts on human health as well as the health of domestic animal populations. Despite impressive vaccine successes, however, many infectious diseases cannot yet be efficiently controlled or eradicated through vaccination, often because it is impossible to vaccinate a sufficient proportion of the population. Recent advances in molecular biology suggest...
متن کاملReinvolvement with Squamous Cell Carci-noma after 14 years of Cured Esophageal Cancer
Esophageal cancer is a lethal disease with poor survival rate. It is necessary to determine the extension, and the stage of the tumor to predict the outcome of patients. Of the two common pathologic types, squamous cell carcinoma is still the most common form, and adenocarcinoma is the leading one. Early diagnosis and radical treatment of esophageal cancer, regardless of tumor spreading, increa...

Background: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (C-JD) is a rare disorder characterized with rapidly progressive mental decline, myoclonic jerk and finally death. The transmissible pathogen for this disease is a proteinaceous infectious particle termed prion. The prion protein is encoded by a gene (designated as PRNP) on the short arm chromosome 20.This disorder is diagnosed based on clinical findings, c...
